One of the Wonders of Iowa

They are made beautiful by years of standing in the weather,
bearing storms and scorching sun--only that can produce beautiful barn wood.

One of the most thrilling things of the Iowa landscape is to come across an old barn. There is a story in each one. A family now long gone, a farmer moved to town, cats and chickens and ghosts of the past hinted at in the swirling of the perpetual barn swallows.

Thank you for your kind words on the marketplace daily art blog. I grew up in Iowa and lived in several cities, my sister was born in Fairfield, have been to Amanas a few times. I have been watching the tv in amazement the last few days with the Cedar River, recalling living in many of those towns.

Oh My! I am so happy to have stumbled upon your blog, Fellow Iowan! I am born and raised in Davenport, Iowa. Both my parents' family are from Centerville, so I've traveled through Fairfield many a time! You are so right with the old barn board comment! I recently happened upon what I believe to possibly have been an old school house - and it's PINK (probably due to the fading of the sun) off Hwy 61 north towards Cascade. I just wanted to pull off the road and fix it up and move in! haha I have a pic of it and will email it to you! So nice to know you now! Smiles, Lorie
